Frequency inverters, what are they?

What a frequency inverter is.

A frequency inverter changes output voltage frequency and magnitude to alter the speed, power and torque of a connected induction motor to meet load conditions. The normal power supply delivers 50Hz or 60Hz, a frequency inverter can change that power to different speeds. Most modern frequency inverters use insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBT) for the inverter section, this can turn the higher frequency on or off from up to 20kHz.
